Digital Future Society, which is promoted by the Third Deputy Prime Minister’s Office of Spain – Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) and Red.es, is launching the challenge “How can we reduce the technology sector’s ecological footprint in response to the climate emergency?” in collaboration with Barcelona City Hall.
Although digital transformation is heralding many opportunities for society, it is also giving rise, for example, to increased energy consumption from the use of devices, of distribution networks and of data centres; to the mining of resources and the generation of waste associated with the manufacture and disposal of electronic devices; and emissions and other environmental impacts generated during the life cycle of technology solutions.
This challenge, to which 80,000 euros have been allocated, is intended to yield technological solutions that check and reduce the ecological footprint of both public and private technology sector companies (particularly SMEs and startups), with consideration for the life cycle phases of the products and services they offer (design, mining of resources and use of raw materials, manufacture, distribution, use and eventual disposal), or for the existing and/or future ICT infrastructure. Barcelona City Hall has assigned 40,000 euros to the initiative –specifically through the Agenda 2030 and Digital Transition sections– and has also pledged the support of the BIT Habitat Foundation for the challenge. This initiative demonstrates Barcelona City Hall’s commitment to the Agenda 2030 promotion strategy, through these types of proposals as the most specific tools for assuming and developing the Sustainable Development Goals, which in this case are specifically goals number 9 and 13: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; and Climate Action.
The challenge has an international scope and is open to companies of all kinds. The period for submitting entries is from 15 April to 5 June. The participation process will involve three rounds of evaluation after which different experts from MWCapital, Barcelona City Hall and independent professionals will select the two winning proposals. The winners will be announced in July and each will receive 40,000 euros, plus the logistics backing of MWCapital for the implementation of its respective pilot project in Barcelona.
The proposals, which will be presented using the website of Digital Future Society, must respond the challenge launched in the award announcement and provide specific and measurable results. Candidates must be ready to undertake the pilot project in a period of under 12 months. Solutions must also be technological (software and/or hardware), although they may also be combined with consultancy, strategic advice and knowledge management activities.
