COFIDES is partnering with Aleatica in the construction of the Magdalena River Highway 2 in the department of Antioquia and Santander, Colombia. It will provide 25 million euros through a joint venture loan from its own resources and the Fund for Foreign Investment (FIEX).

The Río Magdalena highway is being developed in the country's second largest manufacturing region, Antioquia, improving links between the west and centre of the country and the Caribbean and Atlantic coast. The infrastructure will be 153.3 km long - 83.5 km of which will be new construction - and will provide greater safety and reduced travel times for users.

This highway is part of the first wave of Colombia's 4G (fourth generation) motorway concession programme, the aim of which is to modernise the country's infrastructure network through the concession of 40 different toll roads covering more than 8,000km. The programme is a strategic priority for the Colombian government, as it is one of the country's main growth drivers in the short term.

The COFIDES chairman, José Luis Curbelo, stated that "it is gratifying to be able to contribute to improving infrastructure within Colombia, a country adapting to peace, by supporting new projects that will improve economic activity and competitiveness, as well as people's quality of life, while promoting the sustainable development of the parts of the country that will now be able to enjoy increased road connectivity".

“Aleatica aims to promote smart, sustainable and safe mobility by facilitating the creation of high-performance motorways," said Alejandro Niño, managing director of Río Magdalena.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE SDGS

This project makes a significant contribution to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, Industry, innovation and infrastructure. The construction of this motorway will increase the number of daily passengers using private transport by 2,500. It also contributes to SDG 8, Decent work and economic growth, with the creation of 3,456 jobs, and SDG 5, Gender equality, with 463 women employed.
