In today´s meeting, COFIDES´s General Meeting of Shareholders approved the appointment of José Luis Curbelo as Chairman and CEO of the Company, replacing Salvador Marín.

José Luis Curbelo has a wide experience in COFIDES, since was the Director of the Investment Division between the years 1999 and 2009. In his professional career he also held different positions, such as Chief Economist and Deputy Chairman of Development Strategies and Public Politics in the CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, CEO of the Basque Institute of Competitiveness (Orkestra), Head of the Small Company Development Unity of the Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN) in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Head of the Studies Department of the Mortgage Bank of Spain.

He has a solid academic background: he received a PhD from the University of California-Berkeley, a Master´s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Degree in Economy from the University of the Basque Country. In addition to this, he took training courses at Harvard University, Harvard Business School, the JFK School of Government, the University of California-Los Angeles, the Amsterdam Institute of Finance or the World Bank, among others. His postgraduate studies were financed by grants from the Fundación Fulbright-Banco de Bilbao, the Fundación Juan March and the National Science Foundation and Newhouse Foundation of the United States.

In the academic field, he is a Full Researcher of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and he was Dean of the Faculty of Legal and Economic Sciences of the Camilo José Cela University, Director of the BBVA Chair of Entrepreneurship at the Nebrija University, Project Financing Professor at the Carlos III University, Teacher of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) and Visiting Professor at the University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte (Brazil).

He is the author of many monographs and academic publications and he regularly publishes in newspapers. He has also provided consultancy services to the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank or the Economic Commission for Latin America (CEPAL).

COFIDES is a public-private company which has been offering financial support to Spanish companies investing abroad since 1988. It is the exclusive manager of FIEX and FONPYME funds on behalf of the Secretariat of State for Trade attached to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. Shareholders include Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Banco Santander, Banco Popular, Banco Sabadell and CAF-Development Bank of Latin America.
